Laurens County in upstate South Carolina... * Until 730 AM EDT. * At 504 AM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across Anderson, Greenwood, and Abbeville Counties. Between 5 and 9 inches of rain have fallen, with the highest rainfall totals so far across central and eastern Greenwood County and southern Laurens County. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible as tropical rainbands lift north. Significant flooding appears likely, resulting in road closures, first-floor inundation, and damage to some structures. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Scattered road closures and first-floor inundation appear likely, primarily in the vicinity of overflowing streams. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
