* At 200 AM EDT, dam operators reported the floodgates on the Cowans
Ford Dam / Lake Norman were opened causing flash flooding
downstream on the Catawba River.
This is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Mountain Island Lake and
Communities Downstream of Mountain Island Lake Dam. This is a
PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!
HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding from a dam floodgate
release.
SOURCE...Dam operator.
IMPACT...This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK
HIGHER GROUND NOW! IMMEDIATE EVACUATION for areas
along the river immediately downstream of the dam.
* The nearest downstream town is Mountain Island Lake and Riverside
Dr Community.
This includes the following streams and drainages...
Gar Creek, Long Creek, Trib to Lake Norman, McDowell Creek, Fites
creek, Paw Creek, Dutchmans Creek, Johnson Creek, trib to Catawba
river and Catawba River.
Flooding is occurring along the Catawba River.
Instruction:
Move to higher ground now! This is an extremely dangerous and
life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are
fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.
If you are in low lying areas below the Cowans Ford Dam / Lake
Norman you should move to higher ground immediately.
