...The Flood Warning continues for the Pigeon River in North Carolina... At Canton affecting Haywood County. .DEVASTATING AND CATASTROPHIC FLOODING IS DEVLOPING WITHIN THE PIGEON RIVER WATERSHED. THIS IS A PARTICULARY DANGEROUS SITUATION! STAY AWAY! Floodwaters may reach and possibly exceed the flood levels that happened during the floods of record in September 2004. * WHAT...Moderate flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast. IMPORTANT: this approaches the flood of record. * WHERE...Pigeon River at Canton. * WHEN...Until tomorrow morning. * IMPACTS...At 19.0 feet, Major Flood Stage. Extremely rare and catastrophic flooding is developing in Canton with disastrous impacts to property. Extraordinary flooding exceeding 6 ft deep is overwhelming low-lying areas near the Pigeon River. Basements and crawl spaces may be completely submerged. First-floor building elevations in Canton are experiencing ruinous flooding greater than 1 ft deep. Travel may be severely restricted with roadway inundation exceeding 3-4 ft, stranding several homes and businesses. * At 20.7 feet, catastrophic flooding of areas along the Pigeon River. Floodwater levels will be similar to the levels that occurred on September 8, 2004. * At 22.8 feet, historic flooding of areas along the Pigeon River. Floodwater levels will be similar to the levels that occurred on September 17, 2004. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 7:30 AM EDT Friday the stage was 17.1 feet and rising rapidly. - Action/Advisory Stage is 10.0 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 22.0 feet this afternoon. It will then fall below Minor Flood Stage later tonight. - Minor Flood Stage is 10.0 feet. Moderate Flood Stage is 15.0 feet. Major Flood Stage is 19.0 feet. - Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of 22.8 feet on 09/17/2004 during Hurricane Ivan.
