Description:
* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam. * WHERE...Aniak. * WHEN...Until 800 PM AKDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 805 PM AKDT, the River Watch Team has reported water continues to slowly rise in and around Aniak due to ice jamming in the Kuskokwim River near Aniak and the Aniak Slough. Water has inundated low-lying areas near the runway and has encroached the AC store and homes near the upstream/east side of the runway. As of Saturday evening, the River Watch Team reported that ice jamming on the Kuskokwim River and the Aniak Slough continues to result in high water levels for Aniak and the surrounding area. Ice flushing and then damming towards the middle of the Aniak Slough has diverted water into smaller back channels that stretch into Housing Main Rd. Water is or may encroach lower areas such as by the fire station or near the high school. Water levels elsewhere have dropped since yesterday as the Aniak Slough backwater is now the primary contributor to flooding at this time. Until ice is flushed from both the slough and the river, water levels may continue to fluctuate. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood - If you live near or along near the Kuskokwim River at Aniak or the Aniak Slough stay alert and be prepared to take action.
