Description:
* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible. * WHERE...Aniak * WHEN...Through Friday evening. * IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, sloughs, and other low-lying flood prone locations. Water may impound behind a jam which may cause flooding several miles upstream. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 11 AM AKDT Thursday May 7th, the River Watch Team on the Kuskokwim River observed the breakup front is jammed 3 to 5 miles upstream from Aniak with ice accumulated behind it. The river is free of original, in place ice from the jam through Stony River. However, runs of ice are still coming, most notably with a bank to bank run of ice passing Crooked Creek at 11am Thursday. As these runs of ice reach the Aniak ice jam, it will likely cause ice movement and increased flooding potential at Aniak. Now is the time to take precautions. Residents of Aniak should be prepared for increased flood potential and ice jams as this moves past the community. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
