Description:
At 148 PM HST, radar indicated heavy rain continuing to fall over
the Puna and Kau districts along the southeast slopes of the Big
Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour with
more rain expected. Additionally, Emergency Management reported
Highway 11 was closed between mile marker 50 to 51, and Pahala is
now cut off.
HAZARD...Heavy rain producing life threatening flash flooding.
SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges.
IMPACT...Significant and life threatening flooding in drainages,
streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low lying
areas. Multiple public road closures expected, as well
as landslides in steep terrain.
Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
The Kau and Puna districts.
Instruction:
Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even
if they are currently dry.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on
foot. Turn around, don't drown.
