FFWHFO
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the
* Flash Flood Warning for...
The island of Maui in Maui County
* Until midnight HST tonight.
* At 855 PM HST, radar indicated heavy showers and thunderstorms
persisting over West Maui, with rain falling at rates of 1 to 2
inches per hour. Stream levels remain high across West Maui, and
emergency management recently reported road closures in the
Lahaina, Kahului, and Wailuku areas. Additional heavy showers are
developing south of Maui and are expected to lift northward over
the island through the late evening and overnight hours. Given the
saturated grounds from recent heavy rainfall, particularly in
Kihei, even brief periods of heavy rain could quickly lead to
renewed runoff and flooding impacts.
HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain.
SOURCE...Radar.
IMPACT...Flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads,
properties, and other low-lying areas. Public road
closures possible in some areas. Landslides are
possible in steep terrain.
* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Waikapu, Maalaea, Wailuku, Puunene,
Waiehu, Waihee, Paia, Haliimaile, Olowalu, Pukalani, Makawao,
Kahakuloa, Wailea, Kula, Keokea, Pauwela and Haiku-Pauwela.
Instruction:
Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even
if they are currently dry.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
The heavy rains may cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain areas.
