Check for Vehicle, Car Seat, Tire, and Equipment Safety Recalls
Search easily for safety recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications for vehicles, car seats, tires, and other equipment. By using tools like license plate or VIN lookup, you can determine if a specific vehicle requires repairs due to an open recall. Alternatively, you can search by a vehicle’s year, make, and model or by equipment type to access general recall and safety information.
What Information Will You See in Search Results?
- License Plate or VIN Search: This provides details about whether a specific vehicle has an unrepaired recall. If no recalls are found, you’ll see the message: "0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN."
- Year, Make, and Model Search: This offers general results for recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications related to vehicles, car seats, tires, or other equipment.
What Does the License Plate and VIN Search Show?
- Unrepaired Recalls: If a vehicle from certain manufacturers has an open recall, it will be displayed.
- No Recalls Found: If there are no unrepaired recalls, you’ll see confirmation that none are associated with the VIN.
What the License Plate and VIN Search Won’t Show:
- Repaired Recalls: Safety recalls that have already been addressed won’t appear.
- Recently Announced Recalls: Some recalls may not yet include all VINs, so it’s recommended to check regularly.
- Older Recalls: Recalls older than 15 years (unless extended by the manufacturer) are excluded.
- Small Manufacturer Recalls: Recalls from small or ultra-luxury manufacturers may not be listed.
- Non-Safety Campaigns: Manufacturer service campaigns unrelated to safety are not included.
- International Vehicle Recalls: Recalls for vehicles not sold in the U.S. are excluded.
Why Might the License Plate Search Show a Different Vehicle?
License plate data is sourced from state DMVs. If the search result shows a vehicle you no longer own, it’s likely because your DMV records haven’t been updated. Contact your state DMV to correct this. In the meantime, you can search using your vehicle’s VIN for accurate results.
