east of Guam. Storm motion was west-northwest, 285 degrees, at 8
mph. Storm intensity was 155 mph.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
A Typhoon Warning remains in effect for the Marianas as Super
Typhoon Bavi (09W) continues its approach. Bavi is expected to
make passage through the southern Marianas beginning Monday
morning at high-end Category 4 or Category 5 strength. It is
expected to continue toward the west-northwest and gradually
increase in forward speed through Monday. The onset of tropical
storm force conditions is currently expected this evening. The
latest forecast track still maintains passage somewhere near or to
the north of Rota Island, but there is time for the track to
shift north or south. All islands will experience impacts. At
minimum, damaging tropical storm force conditions are expected,
but damage will be catastrophic near the center of Super Typhoon
Bavi, with maximum sustained winds forecast at 160 mph at time of
passage Monday morning. Significant flooding from torrential
rains, and coastal inundation are expected. Surf will become
extremely dangerous ahead of Bavi's approach, potentially reaching
35 feet Monday. Significant coastal inundation and erosion are
expected, with storm surge reaching 6 to 9 feet near the storm
center with 10 to 15 feet of wind- and wave-driven runup.
For the islands closest to passage of Super Typhoon Bavi, the
onset of typhoon conditions is expected Monday morning just ahead
of Bavi's center, continuing through Monday afternoon. Destructive
typhoon conditions may be expected for 8 to 10 hours close to the
center's passage, depending on forward speed.
Instruction:
Make the final preparations to protect life and property. Rush to
completion the hardening of your home or business by closing
shutters and bracing garage doors. Damaging winds are expected to
develop within the next 3 to 6 hours.
If evacuating to a shelter, leave now. Guard against being stuck
out on roadways when dangerous winds and heavy rains arrive.
Again, do not stay in a metal roof or container home. Remember,
pets are not allowed in most official shelters, so check ahead
with your intended shelter.
If staying in a home, turn the refrigerator to maximum cold and
keep it closed. Turn off propane tanks and unplug small
appliances. Fill the bathtub with water in case the tap water
becomes unavailable after the storm. This is for cleaning and
flushing purposes. Do not drink it.
