Rip Current Statement
Urgency:
Expected
Effective:
July 9, 2026 - 10:58am
Expires:
July 9, 2026 - 11:00pm
Description:
* WHAT...Large breaking waves up to 10 feet expected in the surf zone. Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Along north, south, and west facing reefs of the Marianas. * WHEN...Until 4 PM ChST Friday. * IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Significant west to southwest swells continue to emanate from Super Typhoon Bavi (09W) and its trailing monsoon pattern, maintaining hazardous surf and a high risk of rip currents along north, south, and west facing reefs. So, the High Surf Advisory and High Rip Current Risk have been extended through Friday afternoon. As Bavi continues to pull away and the leading monsoon surge weakens, swells and associated surf will continue to diminish, potentially falling below hazardous levels by Friday night.
Instruction:
Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
