Description:
* WHAT...For the Heat Advisory, heat index values up to 104
expected. For the Extreme Heat Watch, dangerously hot conditions
with heat index values up to 109 possible.
* WHERE...Portions of north central Maryland, northwest and western
Virginia, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
* WHEN...For the Heat Advisory, from 11 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT
this evening. For the Extreme Heat Watch, from Thursday morning
through Friday evening.
* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during
extreme heat and high humidity events. Hot temperatures and high
humidity may cause heat illnesses.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Dangerous heat may linger into Saturday.
Prolonged extreme heat could impact power, water, and
transportation systems.
Instruction:
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Look before you lock. Never leave anyone unattended in a vehicle as
temperatures can reach lethal levels in a matter of minutes during
extreme heat.
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! In cases of heat stroke, call 9 1 1.
