Description:
A glacier dammed lake outburst from Summit Lake is ongoing along the Salmon River near Hyder. Water levels as of 10 am Thursday are 26.2 ft at the USGS river gage and it looks to be nearing a crest. After the river crest water levels will drop fast through Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. For reference this is similar river levels as of last years outburst flooding event. The USDA Forest Service has reported to NWS of a failure of a dike along the river. This failure and is producing damaging impacts to the Fish Creek Bear Viewing area. Stay away from the flooded area. Another potential impact area for this event is the road from Hyder to Premier, Canada at around mile point 9 along the Salmon River. Be aware of debris in the water. Very cold water will increase the threat of hypothermia. Please report any observed impacts to the National Weather Service.
