The federal eviction moratorium has expired. Congress was unable to extend it. As a result, millions of people in the U.S. are likely to need to leave their homes in the next two months.

The federal eviction moratorium was created 11 months ago by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The temporary nationwide federal moratorium halted residential evictions for nonpayment of rent.

The order was designed to prevent the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) by preventing homelessness and overcrowded housing conditions resulting from eviction.

The moratorium prohibits evictions only for nonpayment of rent and related fees, not other causes, and it does not prohibit landlords from charging fees or penalties, nor does it forgive unpaid rent amounts.

Pandemic Impacts Households

The coronavirus pandemic continues to surge and is not only impacting health and business, it’s impacting households from a social and economic perspective. In response,  the U.S. Census Bureau conducted a Household Pulse Survey to see how people are impacted by the pandemic.

According to the U.S. Census Household Pulse Survey, roughly 3 million people had no confidence in their ability to make next month’s payment for owner-occupied housing units.
Nearly 1 in 5 of respondents said they were somewhat to very likely leaving their home due to foreclosure in the next two months
