On December 20, 2019, U.S. President Donald J. Trump created the U.S. Space Force (USSF) - a new branch of the Armed Forces. The USSF will maintain and enhance the Department of Defense's competitive edge in space and adapt to new challenges.
President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act into legislation at the Joint Base Andrews, Md. The Fiscal year 2020 includes $738 billion in funds for new aircraft, ship construction, armored vehicles, tanks, and military and civilian pay raises.
The USSF will be stood up over the next 18 months. The Secretary of the Air Force has overall responsibility.
According to the U.S. Space Force's website, its mission "is a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. USSF responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces to present to our Combatant Commands."
