Description:
* WHAT...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, minor coastal flooding.
For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves around 14-15
feet and occasionally higher. For the High Risk of Rip
Currents, life-threatening rip currents.
* WHERE...Beaches of northern Puerto Rico, from Rincon to
Fajardo. The most vulnerable areas for high surf and localized
beach erosion include Pinones along road 187, Parcelas Suarez,
Villas del Mar, and Villa Cristiana in Loiza; Fortuna in
Luquillo; Pueblo and Tamarindo in Aguadilla; Barrio Obrero,
Pueblo and Jarealito in Arecibo; La Boca in Barceloneta;
Machuca in Manati; Puerto Nuevo in Vega Baja; and Ocean Park
in San Juan.
* WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, through 8 PM AST
Saturday. For the High Surf Advisory, through 6 PM AST Sunday.
For the High Risk of Rip Currents, through Sunday afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Rip currents that can sweep even the best swimmers
away from shore into deeper water where it becomes difficult
to return to safety. High waves that can wash over jetties and
sweep people and pets onto jagged rocks. Rough surf may also
knock you down. Large breaking waves will result in localized
beach/dune structure erosion and dangerous swimming
conditions. Large breaking waves will result in some beach
erosion with only minor damage possible to dune structure.
Shallow flooding of vulnerable areas will result in limited
threat of property and structural damage near the waterfront
and shoreline, with a higher threat near the time of high
tide. Isolated road closures are possible.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A long-period northerly swell continues
to spread across the local waters. Expect life-threatening rip
currents and dangerous swimming conditions, with localized
beach erosion possible through the weekend. The next high
tides are expected as follows: In San Juan, at 7:22 AM AST at
1.75 ft and 6:07 PM AST at 0.78 ft; in Arecibo, at 6:36 AM AST
at 1.97 ft and 5:55 PM AST at 0.72 ft; in Aguadilla, 6:30 AM
AST at 1.48 ft and 5:56 PM AST at 0.51 ft; and in Fajardo, at
6:58 AM AST at 1.67 ft and 6:12 PM AST at 0.81 ft.
Instruction:
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions.
There is a high risk of rip currents.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain
calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
