Expected
Effective:
January 3, 2025 - 3:56pm
Expires:
January 4, 2025 - 4:00pm
Description:
A series of systems will be advancing across the panhandle beginning Saturday and continuing through the end of next week, bringing widespread active weather back to Southeast Alaska. Impactful snow is looking to focus over the northern panhandle, prompting the issuance of a Winter Weather Advisory for Yakutat and a Winter Storm Watch for Haines, Skagway, Gustavus, and Juneau. For further information on the snow threat please reference the winter statement for your area. An atmospheric river becomes directed at the northern gulf coast Monday, then shifts eastward across the panhandle Monday night through Tuesday. This will bring significantly warmer temperatures and heavy rainfall. The exception will be the upper elevations where significant accumulations is possible. Gusty winds will also accompany this feature. A brief lull on Wednesday will be followed by another system and atmospheric river late in the week. River rises are possible with these two systems, along with ponding and runoff in some locations as water flows off of frozen ground. Rainfall totals at sea level look to remain near 2 to 4 inches for both systems. However, 3 to 4 day totals could reach 5 to 7 inches, namely along the northern coast.
