Climate change has brought devastating and dangerous weather, including extreme temperatures, to many locations across the planet.

The combination of rising temperatures, thick humidity, and stale wind are impacting people, businesses, and pets. This summer, a number of households have experienced life threatening heat. The late-June heat wave left hundreds dead in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.

So what can we do to prepare for the next heat wave and keep our pets safe?

Get Prepared

Prepare your home, business, vehicle, RV and boat for extreme heat. The Humane Society is a good place to help you prepare for extreme temperatures.

It provides the following tips:

  • Never leave your pets in parked car
  • Watch the humidity
  • Limit exercise on hot days
  • Don’t rely on a fan
  • Provide ample shade and water
  • Cool your pet inside and out
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke
  • Learn to treat a pet suffering from heatstroke
  • Prepare for power outages
  • Create a disaster and response plan
